Sorry for the delay, here’s the weecap for Reset ep5:
We pick up from where Woo-jin starts recovering bits of the 7-year-ago memories he had suppressed. He takes a midnight drive to the place where he “rescued” Yoon-hee — under the iconic big tree in Mirae Park. That is where his memories of shooting someone happened too. Though he can’t remember the identity or even the face of the person he shot. He scans around the park, and we see a man sneakily shoots photos of Woo-jin. The man is a tail sent by the Prosecution Office, who has set one of their own on Woo-jin, wanting to see if he has links to the incriminating ledger. Unfortunately, the tail is far from being professional…one of the rookies accidentally uses flash to shoot Woo-jin’s pic as he returns from the park, thereby alerting Woo-jin to his tail.
The next day, Yoon-hee leaves Woo-jin’s place, determined to pick up her life without her crush. She meets Eun-bi on her way out, and is shocked by the resemblance of Eun-bi to her deceased sister, Seung-hee.
Woo-jin’s rival in the Prosecution Office (the one who sets the tail on Woo-jin) is furious that nothing has come up from the stalking. He overhears Mdm Han telling his secretary that Woo-jin is re-interviewing a prisoner on the assassin case, and sends for the wardens to bring the prisoner to his office. However, he doesn’t know that he has fallen into a trap set by Woo-jin. Mdm Han has been tasked to drop this juicy “hint”, allowing Woo-jin (disguised as a warden) and Officer Ko to the prison to gain access to the prisoner. Woo-jin manages to whisk the prisoner away from the real warden, and corners him in the lift with his magic clicky pen. The prisoner recounts that he has spotted the assassin vigorously memorising a string of numbers a few days before he was released from prison. Shortly after that, a man passes a slip of paper to the prisoner with instructions to give it secretly to Woo-jin when he comes for the first interview.
Having obtained the info, Woo-jin assigns Mdm Han to trace the source of the numbers and Officer Ko to find out more about the on-fire ahjusshi. Officer Ko interviews the villagers where the ahjusshi stayed and discovers that he had left his daughter (who was later murdered by mob boss Kim’s son) 7 years ago.
On the way home from school (or rather play, since she snucked off to have fun), Eun-bi gets cornered by three girls. She puts up a good fight, and all of them land up at the police station. Mdm Han goes to collect Eun-bi, only to get insulted by the girls’ mums — who are bi*ches themselves. Hilariously, the groups of girls and ahjummas end up having a mass catfight, which Officer Park (sent by Officer Ko) has to break up. Eun-bi and Mdm Han bond at home after that, plastering each other faces with band aids.
The next day, the phone which Eun-bi picks up from chasing the assassin falls out of her school bag. Mdm Han chides her for forgetting to hand over evidence. On their ways to work/school, we see a man (the view is from his perspective) tailing them with a GPS tracker. He seems to be unable to decide who to target first…he reaches for Eun-bi, but luckily her classmate runs over to greet her. The man turns his attention to Mdm Han, only to see her getting into a cab. Mdm Han is on her way to see her ex-hubby, who works as a forensic expert with the police. While waiting for him with the phone Eun-bi has picked up, a man (the same one?) riding a bike make as though to swipe the phone from Mdm Han’s hand. Luckily her ex sees the bike rushing towards her, and pulls Mdm Han to safety. Mdm Han’s ex-husband promises to see if he get any info from the phone.
Woo-jin confronts his colleague the next day, and taunts his lackeys’ lousy tailing skills. He threatens to expose his colleague’s unauthorised stalking to the Internal Investigation Dept, and takes over the USB drive which contains pics which the tails have taken. Woo-jin and Officer Ko run through them to see if the mystery Mr X has been hovering around Woo-jin. On the night where the rookie tail had used the flash to snap Woo-jin’s pic, Officer Ko and Woo-jin spot Officer Park in his car at the same vicinity.
Meanwhile, Eun-bi finishes school and sees Officer Park at the school’s gate. Officer Park says Woo-jin is looking for her, and volunteers to drive her there. She gets into his car. (oh noessss) In the car, Eun-bi accidentally pops open the storage compartment and finds a pic of her dad inside. Officer Park claims that Woo-jin has located her dad, and the pic is meant as a surprise for her. Eun-bi pockets the picture into her bag.
Woo-jin gets Officer Park’s address, and goes over to his house to investigate. He doesn’t find anything there, but in Officer Park’s letterbox, he spots a letter with the same string of numbers which Mdm Han is currently trying to crack (with zero success). Mdm Han receives a call from her ex, who tells her that he is unable to crack the phone’s memory as it is locked with a code. On a hunch, Mdm Han tells her ex-husband to try inputting the string of numbers. He manages to crack it, and says it’s the location of a shipping container. At the same time, Woo-jin calls with the same information.
Woo-jin and Officer Ko investigate the container…but they are shadowed by someone who reports to mob boss Kim that Woo-jin has figured out the location. In the container/ makeshift shelter, Woo-jin sees a wall containing the links and pictures of himself and people who are involved in the 7-year-ago case. One of the pics (of a man) triggers a memory — Woo-jin remembers going to Mirae Park to meet him. Woo-jin directs Officer Ko to find out the identity of the man.
Scene cut to Eun-bi and Officer Park — Officer Park stops the car to help a guy in distress…but staggers back to Eun-bi covered with blood. He has been fatally stabbed…the murderer is the guy who Officer Park has stopped for. Before he dies, Officer Park passes a device (a mobile phone?) to Eun-bi, telling her to pass it to Woo-jin. Eun-bi grabs the device and flees. Being the highly resourceful girl she is, she actually manages to evade the murderer, only losing a shoe in the struggle. However, as she stumbles onto the highway to look for help, she collapses in exhaustion. A car stops and a man wearing leather boots picks up the device and carries her to his car.
Woo-jin and Officer Ko receive news of Officer Park’s death, and speed to the crime scene. Officer Ko finds the picture in Eun-bi’s bag, and is shocked to see that it is the same man whom Woo-jin asks to investigate. Later on, Officer Ko discovers that the man is none other than Eun-bi’s dad, also missing from 7 years ago. Officer Ko tries to get Woo-jin on his phone…but Woo-jin has fallen into a faint at the tree at Mirae Park. Cos he remembers why he met Eun-bi’s dad there that night. He wanted to confront Eun-bi’s dad, as Woo-jin suspected he was the one who raped Seung-hee. But before Woo-jin could say anything further, Eun-bi’s dad leapt at him and shot himself using the gun Woo-jin brought along.
In terms of atmosphere, the suspense level is going up, and things are happening at a really fast pace. But then…we are no nearer to getting any answers from Day 1. I am beginning to fear that we may not get any kind of answers at the end of Reset. There is a pretty high chance we may get Season(s) 2 or 3 or 4… I’s say if you are watching Reset in the hope for some neatly packaged Agatha Christie‘s ending, you may be in for a disappointment.
There are juz too many elements with waving loose ends in Reset that aren’t making much sense even though we are past the halfway mark and nearing the end of the runway. The case of Eun-bi’s dad 7 years ago is somehow tied to Seung-hee — Woo-jin claims Eun-bi’s dad to be the rapist…on what grounds? And why the need to seal the memory away? What is mob boss Kim’s involvement in all these?? Yeah, he suddenly reappears in ep5 when ep2-4, he has gone off in the background. Ep5 leads us to believe he is somehow masterminding Woo-jin’s unblocking of his memory. One explanation can be he wants Woo-jin to figure out who killed the on-fire ahjusshi and thereby, who killed his son (assuming the ahjusshi is under order from another person). Or is mob boss Kim the mysterious Mr X all along?
Also, is Eun-bi’s dad really her dad? It’s juz so freaky that the rapist has a child who looks exactly like (one of?) his victim(s). Eun-bi recounts to Officer Ko that she grew up in an orphanage, and a man (whom she claims is her dad) visits her occasionally. 7 years ago, he stopped visiting. I’m not sure if I’m over reading, but if the rapist is indeed the biological dad…then the mum???
Another rather interesting development is Woo-jin himself. Seems like part of the reason why he self-hypnotised and sealed the 7-year-ago memories is his entry into a darker side of himself. That Woo-jin 7 years ago bordered on madness, even Officer Ko reminds the present Woo-jin to be careful. However, unlike Officer Ko, I’m rather looking forward to the day when Woo-jin reverts to that mad psycho self. Maybe that will provide more answers to this confounded riddle.
On the non puzzling side, I am so into the bonding between Mdm Han and Eun-bi. Mdm Han is like the surrogate mother to the men (Woo-jin and Officer Ko) as well as Eun-bi. It’s hilarious but touching when she drops her prim and proper-ness and goes all out in the catfight to protect Eun-bi. And Eun-bi, having her high EQ and all, recognises that she has found a foster family who actually loves and accepts her. Mdm Han is her “mum”, Officer Ko plays her “dad” (who dispenses daddy-like wisdom to her) and Woo-jin is her oppa. (i doubt OCN will make that oppa into a romantic one though)
