No guest for this week, so it’ll be up to our 3 guys on the island to keep us entertained.
1. Day trip to Kakou-do
It’s juz another day to resume shooting, and the cast troop on board the ferry in a cheery mood towards Manjae-do. However, the crew finds them missing from their family cabin (wha, they got an upsize!) when the ferry docks at Kakou-do — a neighbouring, bigger island an hour away from Manjae-do.
Panicking, Na PD trails after the three, and is reassured only when Chajumma explains they want to explore Kakou-do in the 1h interval the ferry takes to refuel. (oh, and i thought they really absconded)
Well, if you are comparing big cities like Busan or even Mokpo to Kakou-do, the facilities there are laughable. There’s a small building housing a supermart, some pensions, and cheap motels lining the seaside. However, if you compare Kakou-do to the even more backward Manjae-do (which has nothing), Kakou-do is like Seoul. And that’s exactly how the cast feel, as they ooh and aah over the well-stocked supermart.
2. Squid for Octopus
The cast finally arrive around 2pm at Manjae-do, and after bustling about to get their little hut running, they start preparing lunch. Chajumma furtively takes out a black plastic bag and hides it inside a cupboard, before striding out to call on Na PD to “strike a bargain”.
Hmm…well, the plastic bag contains frozen pork and squid which Chajumma bought before boarding the ferry. He wheedles Na PD to allow him to cook stirfried pork + squid — in return, Papa Yoo will catch that octopus for Three. (oi, did he juz sabotaged Papa Yoo?)
Na PD agrees, and the cast has a very good spread (for the first time) for lunch.
3. Dog vs. Cat
After lunch, Ho-joonie goes into the room to feed San-je (Bee had earlier been fed). However, the greedy cat apparently hasn’t had enough. He tries to steal dog food from San-je’s bowl, only to be rebuffed by the dog. (aww)
In return, Bee spends the whole day pouting. He jumps up on the tallest platform of the cat tower and refuses to come down to play with San-je. (hahaha) The poor doggie spent the whole day barking, whining, and pleading with his kitty fren to “come down from there and play with me!”
Lunch ends at 4pm, which means after cleaning up, it’s time for dinner prep. And since the season is turning wintry, the number of daylight hours deceases. So while Chajumma and Ho-joonie stay back to clean up, Papa Yoo hurries to try his luck at fishing for tonight’s meal.
Lady Luck seems to be by his side this evening, as he easily reels in 3 large, fat rock fish. Chajumma is pleased that his spicy stew can now be transformed into spicy FISH stew.
While Chajumma scales the live catch, Papa Yoo tends to the fire. In no time at all, the tiny flame becomes a roaring bonfire. So hot that the poor pot on the wire rack seems to be undergoing heat torture.
But the fire is also good for something else — roasting sweet potatoes. Papa Yoo bought a few at Mokpo, and he rolls them in aluminium foils and tosses them into the stove. Before it takes the stew to cook, the sweet potatoes are ready. (oh man, i love roasted sweet potatoes)
Needless to say, the fish stew is very well received. During the meal, Papa Yoo suddenly remembers how his dad loves to nag him during dinner times. A round of play acting ensues, with Papa Yoo playing the annoyed Father, Chajumma the tsking Mother, and Ho-joonie, the targeted son.
It goes like this:
Papa Yoo (to Ho-joonie, who is munching his food): …and what shall we do with you? At your age, you don’t even have a proper job…”
Chajumma: “don’t nag while our son is eating”
Ho-joonie (downcast): “I’m done eating…” (gets up to leave)
Chajumma (in disapproval): “see?!”
Papa Yoo (annoyed): “what? did I say anything wrong?”
Hilarious. But like Papa Yoo says, every family probably had a scene like that happening during dinner times.
While dinner last night was scrumptious, next morning’s breakfast is an entirely different affair. The lousy chickens refuse to produce eggs (again), so the cast has to warm up yesterday’s lunch egg drop soup, and last night’s leftover rice for nurungji breakfast.
Chajumma finds a jegi (a shuttlecock toy which u kick) and he invites the other 2 for a round of competition. The winner will win 10,000 won. Unfortunately, Chajumma loses to both Papa Yoo and Ho-joonie in the 2 rounds of competition.
After the betting session, it’s back to business. Papa Yoo and Ho-joonie travel on boat towards offshore islets near Manjae-do to fish and collect clams for today’s meal.
Papa Yoo’s target is to reel in a grouper today — and we see him struggling with a catch…but we don’t get to see what it is yet.
Until next week then, when we have Yoon Kye-sang, last guest and ultimate slave, to the Three‘s family.
