It doesn’t take long for the cat to be out of the bag, and though Soo-hyun tries to do damage control, it has become rather too late.
Soo-hyun discovers the uncomfortable possibility that he may have developed feelings for Hye-rim when she dates him to eat chicken feet and he gets some skin ship along the way. Back in his office, he ponders over the “physical manifestation” of his emotions and reminds himself to re-distance himself from Hye-rim, and to view her “only as a subject”. (good luck to dat)
On his competitor front, Seung-chan also realizes that he has fallen for Hye-rim and decides to terminate the experiment. Soo-hyun dissuades him from it but can’t help but feel uncomfortable at the notion that Seung-chan likes Hye-rim. Hilariously, Ji-ho thinks he also has fallen in love with Hye-rim…after he spots her changing. (and juz in case u are going wide eyed at the implication…no, he isn’t a Peeping Tom, he happened to see Hye-rim preening in front of a mirror and went gaga) So Ji-ho plan to have more shots of Hye-rim noona “changing” by installing a drone camera to get that 360 view. (someone should tell him his idea is creepy)
The experiment starts to slide further downhill with Hye-rim’s continued snooping. She even tirelessly pieced together a torn report (from Soo-hyun’s first Korean subject) from the bits in the shredder machine. Thankfully she did that. Cos days later, said lady turns up to rage at Soo-hyun for ruining her life. Seems like her Experiment Guy A whom she chose also ended up falling in love with her…but the aftermath of knowing she was in an experiment caused her to doubt their relationship. So much so that they eventually broke up and called off a wedding.
In typical Soo-hyun style, our callous experimenter brushes aside all her wailings and threats to “sue him”, pointing out she signed the agreement to waive off all damages earlier on. (tho i’d like to contest that, cos she didn’t know what she was signing for) The lady can only leave in disgust. However, Hye-rim spots her and remembers her from “that vid” which she stored. Upon contacting her, she easily gets the whole story out…and is LIVID with rage when she discovers similarities with her current situation.
Hye-rim storms into Soo-hyun’s office to confront him, and Ji-ho. Shocked, Soo-hyun nevertheless manages to cook up a fairly convincing story about never repeating the same experiment, etc to temporarily mollify Hye-rim. But her parting comment about never forgiving Soo-hyun if he lied to her rattles him a large bit. He starts to review his participation in the experiment and decides to withdraw from it.
Easier said than done. Especially if both of them are working together to help clients. The case-of-the-day for eps3/4 has to do with a young man, Yoo-rim’s colleague. She invites him to a gathering with Hye-rim et.al. to incite SOME sort of jealous reaction from Ji-ho. (that gal has fallen head over heels in love with robot guy) Nothing of that sort happened…but something else did. After a series of drinks, Yoo-rim’s colleague starts to act really out of behavior. From the meek, serious guy (when sober), he starts hollering about hating bento lunches, and begins to strip…then proceeds to run out into the cold wintry air with nothing on but his pants. The guys have some trouble chasing him down. Soo-hyun diagnoses him as having alcohol-induced regression. However, even with persuasion, he refuses to accept consultation.
So the only way to treat Yoo-rim’s colleague is to make him drink again. Soo-hyun and Hye-rim invite him to a bar and slowly start to ply him with drinks. The same thing happens…but this time, Yoo-rim films it. Unfortunately, cos Soo-hyun crashes after a single shot, he is unable to help Hye-rim capture the runaway, semi-naked client. Ends up she gets mistakenly hauled into the police station for causing a nuisance. What happened next is interesting though: Soo-hyun, upon learning of Hye-rim’s predicament (after waking up from his alcohol stupor) actually mangles Seung-chan’s scooter in order to get into the same remand centre as Hye-rim.
Seung-chan strongly suspects that Soo-hyun has also fallen in love with his subject, and lies to him the next day that Hye-rim has a terminal illness — which Soo-hyun falls for, bait hook and sinker. When Soo-hyun realizes what he has done, he becomes more determined to change out his role as Experiment Guy A, and gets Ji-ho to source for new potentials. All of whom he rejects for petty reasons…
But back to our case. Thanks to the video footage Yoo-rim caught, Soo-hyun and Prof Bae manage to discover the root cause of Yoo-rim’s colleague regression. Soo-hyun calls him in for a chat…after a looong while, the story finally breaks. Yoo-rim’s colleague had been physically abused by his father who is an alcoholic. He began to hate father figures and see them as evil, but the flip side of years of mental stress from living in an abusive family had made Yoo-rim’s colleague very strait laced and proper in his adult life. Unfortunately, he suffers from the same alcohol-induced rage like his dad — who at this moment, is on his deathbed in hospital. Soo-hyun persuades him to visit his dad for the last time, and although unwilling, Yoo-rim’s colleague finally meets his dad and resolves the years of hatred and grievances.
Ji-ho finally sources a new candidate to replace Soo-hyun. A engineering professor, who is interested in the experiment cos he is trying to invent a machine that caters to women’s needs. (no idea what) The professor meets with Hye-rim at her café, and hilariously answers Hye-rim’s nonsensical French spiel on finding public toilets…in French. (WHOOPS) However, instead of being embarrassed, Hye-rim is pleased that someone knows other languages like her. She checks that the professor doesn’t know German and starts to spout German. (again about rubbish)
The professor seems to genuinely like Hye-rim, much to Soo-hyun’s dismay. He puts on a heavy disguise and trails after them while they date, and tries all means and ways to spoil their day. Yunno, like kicking their seats from behind in the cinema, or making sure a waitress spills drinks on them in the restaurant. Finally Soo-hyun cannot stand seeing his Hye-rim cozying up with the professor and orders his replacement out.
On the other romantic fronts: Yoo-rim makes advances towards Ji-ho. She pretends to “teach” him how to kiss by (ahem) kissing him…only to be shocked when Ji-ho finds he likes it and whirls her around to kiss her. As for Prof Bae and her crush on Seung-chan…she finds out that Seung-chan likes piano pieces and decides to learn piano for him. (aww)
Heh, well it didn’t take that long for Soo-hyun to fall into his own trap. Now that he realizes he likes Hye-rim for real, I wonder how it will affect him. [kooriyuki: Serves him right! LOL] He seems to have problems of his own from childhood that he has very carefully brushed under the carpet and ignored over the years. His misogynistic behavior towards women, calling them materialistic even in the face of “Love” likely stems from his abandonment by his biological mum.
The romances on the sidelines are interesting too. Particularly Yoo-rim and her robot beau. Ji-ho is the stereotypical analytical genius who fails spectacularly in the emo-department. He has difficulties even grasping simple emotions like jealousy and love. He thinks he loves Hye-rim, but methinks it’s likely Lust. On the other hand…that kiss with Yoo-rim, there’s a fair chance that the more primal part of him is finally emerging.
