The case this week is of a client suffering from DID (re: Hyde, Jekyll and me or Kill Me, Heal Me). But…the only one suffering from split personalities isn’t juz the client. Poor Soo-hyun is now torn between playing the roles of the Scientist, Guy A or Human. (serves him right)
Hye-rim is unable to shake off her suspicions about Soo-hyun, despite him persistently telling her he loves her. She (wisely) decides to “reject” his overtures outright and gives him the cold shoulder.
Meanwhile, Seung-chan agrees to help Prof Bae in her exercise routine (oh dear, he doesn’t know she has cancer and can’t really exert herself…) in exchange for her being his mentor. During one of their sessions, Seung-chan lets slip his worries over Hye-rim being played out by his hyung. (oh yeah, Seung-chan is Soo-hyun’s step brother) Prof Bae learns of the experiments Soo-hyun has been carrying out on women on the topic of “proving” that women’s love are worthless and is rightly upset.
She confronts Soo-hyun, who blithely argues his way out saying that all his experiments thus far have supported his hypothesis. Prof Bae shrewdly asks Soo-hyun why he is against women, and probes on whether a female figure has ever let him down in his life. Soo-hyun confidently replies no. (oh really?)
Seung-chan (who really likes Hye-rim) decides to pursue her aggressively. He invites her to a magic show…but his invitation is overheard by Ji-ho (who THINKS he likes Hye-rim), who then tattles to Soo-hyun to help stop Seung-chan’s progress. And so, the two-some date becomes a three-some one. With Soo-hyun annoying everyone by pooh-poohing all the trickery on stage performed by the magician.
Something happens during the performance though. A lady (Yoo-chan), who sits next to Soo-hyun and has been shivering uncontrollably before the show, collapses. When Soo-hyun et al revives her backstage, she wakes up and suddenly “changes” into another person, aggressively questioning Soo-hyun why she is here. Soo-hyun immediately diagnoses her as suffering from DID (Dissociative Identities Disorder), but is unable to stop the new persona (Emma) from leaving.
Yoo-chan arrives at the clinic the following day (Soo-hyun has slipped his card in her bag), wanting to find out what transpired. However, when Soo-hyun advises her to seek treatment, Yoo-chan balks and runs off. Soo-hyun decides to seek help from Hye-rim, whom Emma hasn’t noticed when she “woke”. After some persuasion, Hye-rim agrees to help in this consultation.
The duo sets off for Yoo-chan/ Emma’s house, and on the way, Hye-rim nags Soo-hyun to utilize his redemption coupons for a car wash. Soo-hyun reluctantly agrees…and we later learn why. The pitter patter of water drops on his car leads Soo-hyun to freeze up — like how he’d over react when drops of liquid splash on him. In his vulnerable state, he apologises to Hye-rim for causing her to feel confused, and insists he really likes her. Hye-rim is touched but also concerned about Soo-hyun’s state, but Soo-hyun brushes aside her worries once his car exited from the auto-wash.
Emma (instead of Yoo-chan) opens the door and shoos Soo-hyun away. Hye-rim, who pretends to be a cosmetic sales rep, manages to enter Emma/Yoo-chan’s house. She takes notes and pics of the interior and secretly sends them to Soo-hyun for analysis. Emma takes a liking to Hye-rim and decides to befriend her, even bringing her on a shopping spree for rock chick clothes. 😛
On the other romantic front: Ji-ho and Yoo-rim continue to “practise” their kisses…until Ji-ho breaks off happily and asks Yoo-rim (very innocently) if he is now “good enough” for Hye-rim noona. That earns him a smack from Yoo-rim and an angry outburst from her not to look for her again. But she can’t help turn up for the next “session” when Ji-ho texts. Only she runs into some neighbourhood thugs roughing Ji-ho up for money. Yoo-rim (who is Akido trained) fights off the thugs, and Ji-ho insists on learning martial arts after seeing how powerfully scary Yoo-rim is.
Still uncertain of Soo-hyun’s sincerity, Hye-rim decides to work on the weakest link — Ji-ho. She butters Ji-ho up and brings him on a day of shopping and food, and he lets slip the name of the experiment Soo-hyun is performing on Hye-rim. Angered, Hye-rim returns to confront Soo-hyun, shocking him with what she knows and guesses (that he set up 3 guys to woo her, and his hypothesis is that she will choose him over the others and that the whole I-like-you is a lie). Soo-hyun insists that he really likes her, and swoops in for a kiss to prove his point.
Although fluttery, Hye-rim isn’t so easily mollified with a kiss. Soo-hyun has no choice but to sit her down, and he cleverly admits to 80% of his experiment’s goal, etc. Hye-rim decides to give him the benefit of doubt at this point (and cos she also detects more sincerity coming from Soo-hyun). She also agrees to try dating Soo-hyun at the latter’s request.
Seung-chan, who earlier spent a fun evening painting up a blank school wall with Hye-rim, crows about it to Soo-hyun. (who then appears with Ji-ho following morning with turpentine to wash the “graffiti” off…lol) He learns of Soo-hyun’s advances, and though he appears cavalier and confident with winning over Hye-rim, Seung-chan is still disturbed. More so when Hye-rim appears withdrawn and more quiet in his presence.
On the case of Emma, Hye-rim learns that Emma had been the one who broke Yoo-chan up with her beau (the magician at the performance). Soo-hyun confirms this fact with the magician, who claimed he wanted to marry Yoo-chan years back, but later was rejected by her (not knowing she was Emma), so he left for the States. When Yoo-chan learns of this, she is upset. Back home, she “confronts” Emma and tells out point blank she will seek treatment to remove her. Emma is furious. Soo-hyun also learns that Yoo-chan first manifested her split personalities in elementary school, a few months after the death of her parents who saved her, but drowned, in a school trip. Yoo-chan appears at Soo-hyun’s clinic a few days after, asking for Emma’s removal. But Soo-hyun cleverly deduces the requestor to be another of Yoo-chan’s personality — that of her mother. Yoo-chan’s mum nods. And also tells Soo-hyun to remove her from Yoo-chan in order to cure her daughter.
On the say of the merging, Yoo-chan is placed under hypnosis and Emma is called out. Although resistant at first, with Soo-hyun and Hye-rim’s help, Emma finally agrees to merge with Yoo-chan, together with their omma.
The evening, Hye-rim and Soo-hyun go on their first date…and while Hye-rim is kinda looking forward to skinship, inexperienced Soo-hyun thinks playing gentleman is the “best” way to approach her. Hye-rim gets pissy when Soo-hyun refuses to make advances and storms back to her café, leaving Soo-hyun utterly confused. (heh, seems like our psychiatrist doesn’t know how to read women after all)
Who should be waiting for Hye-rim in the café but Ji-ho, who has been egged on by Yoo-rim to confess his love. Unfortunately, Hye-rim cuts him off, and point blank tells him she only regards Ji-ho as a kid brother. (juz as Yoo-rim predicted) Ji-ho runs off in tears with Yoo-rim in pursuit.
Soo-hyun starts having more flashes of memory when he was a kid, and he asks Hye-rim to accompany him to a fun fair, since his memories appear to be associated with it. Although still a little peeved, Hye-rim finally agrees. At the fair, Hye-rim asks Soo-hyun to help hold her ice cream and to reserve places to view the parade, while she runs off to buy churros. While gazing at the oncoming parade, Soo-hyun’s flashbacks become more intense. He remembered having a good time with a woman at a fair, she bought him ice cream and snacks…the ice cream Soo-hyun’s holding drips onto his coat… and that triggers another memory.
Same woman crying and scolding young Soo-hyun for dirtying his clothes before he meets his “new mother”, and warning him if he continues to be this sloppy, “Omma will not visit you at your birthday next year”…Young Soo-hyun senses that his mum is about to leave him, and starts to cry in panic. Current Soo-hyun doubles over in pain at the memory and Hye-rim runs to him in shock.
Back at the clinic, Soo-hyun discusses the memory he regains from his dissociative amnesia with Prof Bae. The latter encourages him to seek treatment, but Soo-hyun refuses. He insists he is fine, and being a psychiatrist, he knows what to do. Prof Bae dissuades him, telling him that it is difficult for a psychiatrist to heal himself, but to no avail. Hye-rim has quietly listened in via the one-way mirror in the next room.
Hye-rim later asks Prof Bae what can she do for Soo-hyun. Although Prof Bae ticks her off for listening in without Soo-hyun’s permission, she nevertheless gives Hye-rim tips on helping Soo-hyun. Since Soo-hyun has been abandoned by a maternal figure, that has coloured his opinion towards women (Prof Bae nearly let slip Soo-hyun’s experiments’ goal). So the only way for Hye-rim to help Soo-hyun is to ensure she sticks by his side and not leave him. She also tells Hye-rim what Soo-hyun likes (playing charades…?!) to cheer him up.
Which leads to Hye-rim doing all sorts of weird actions like egging Soo-hyun to play charade with her, being a clown around him and provocatively dancing in front of him to make him happy. Soo-hyun is unimpressed and tells Hye-rim to cut it out.
Until he learns from Prof Bae that Hye-rim’s recent weird actions are meant to cheer him up. He runs back to the café and half in tears, he sincerely apologises and tells Hye-rim he loves her. (followed by a hug…aww)
Ahh, finally we confirm what we long suspected. That Soo-hyun’s abandonment by his biological mother (who never made good the promise to visit him on his birthdays) tainted his image of women as being fickle and prone to lying, and that their so-called love is unreliable. Those “confirmations” he got from his experiments, I’d think they are skewed in favour of his “hypothesis”, since he obviously places his Guy A (the older, more successful man) as being more compatible with his Subject in terms of age and social status.
As of the end of ep8, I am rather confident that Soo-hyun’s (hot) kiss and hug are not juz behaviours to enable Guy A to win his Subject’s (Hye-rim) attention. The human Soo-hyun has finally emerge and is taking baby steps to trust and love another human being (or more particularly, a human female). Judging by how he feels palpitations, nervous excitement on his first date with Hye-rim, and him totally mis-reading Hye-rim’s cues for skinship…he is no longer that cool, suave psychiatrist, but juz another regular Joe who is experiencing romantic love for the first time.
Ironically, Soo-hyun’s gradual discard of his experiment will very, very likely be sabotaged by the other two experimentees he set up — Seung-chan and Ji-ho (Guys B and C, respectively). And I fear if Hye-rim chooses to leave him (after she learns the truth) it may really break him this time.
